Grade 5 English Classes

This is a year of intensifying the learning and practice of the PET exam components with different exercises and papers. Your child will be mastering the components of the language that will be tested. 


Our Grade 5 curriculum is structured around the PET framework and will effectively equip your child with the skills and strategies in:
  • Consolidate and intensify the practice of grammar concepts.
  • Build confidence in answering a wide variety of grammar discrete items and grammar cloze passages. 
  • Anticipate contextual grammar items by practising with longer non-fiction texts.
  • Sharpen ability to identify different types of errors in grammar & correct them.
  • Learn strategies for correcting spelling errors.

1. Grammar:

  • Consolidate the skills for answering a variety of frequently asked questions.
  • Explore the reading of a variety of newspaper articles, websites, posters and documentary passages to help in understanding and information retrieval.
  • Strengthen reading of narrative texts with the aim of answering questions in context.
  • Build grammar and vocabulary items through the reading passages.
  • Timed practices of PSLE revision papers.

2. Reading Comprehension:

  • Build competency in writing narrative compositions.
  • Reinforce and practise different ways of introducing and ending a story.
  • Practise writing a story regularly based on one, two or three pictures with a given title.
  • Memorise vocabulary phrases that can be frequently used.
  • Compile good phrases, expressions and vocabulary items in a handbook for revision.
  • Develop character’s emotions shown through body language, character’s actions and reactions through use of action verbs, adverbs and adjectives.
  • Practise the use of connectors for smooth flow of storyline.

3. Writing:

  • Expose students to a variety of audio materials similar to those in KET exams to ensure familiarity with different accents and contexts.
  • Develop strategies for understanding main ideas, details and specific information, enhancing ability to listen actively and accurately.
  • Regular practice tests to help students become comfortable with the format and timing of the listening component.

4. Listening:

  • Engage in structured conversations and discussion on familiar topics to express themselves confidently during the speaking test.
  • Use appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structure to communicate effectively and accurately.
  • Use of role-plays and simulated scenarios to help students practice real-life communication and handle tasks like describing experience, giving opinions and making comparisons.
